This stunning antique oil on canvas dates back to the mid 19th century and is more than just a still life. Grapes often symbolized abundance, fertility, hope and prosperity. The gilt gesso frame alone is a work of art and is in beautiful condition for its age.
The artist, August Laux (1847-1921), was a German born artist who later immigrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1863. He was commissioned to paint a mural for a private club in Manhattan which brought upon many other opportunities for private residences of wealthy New Yorkers.
His works have gone for auction hundreds of times and are displayed in several museums.
15 of his works have been sold by Christie’s with the most notable work being his still life titled “Raspberries” which was presented in 1984.
Some craquelure is present and there is one patched repair. Overall in beautiful condition for its age.
